Are you working on application essays, a statement of purpose, or other application materials? Application materials benefit dramatically from getting multiple perspectives and feedback. We recommend you start drafting these materials early, so that you have the chance to develop your ideas to their fullest capacity.
To help you with this work, the Writing Centers have tutors who specialize in applications! They are trained to read your materials thoughtfully and encourage you to think deeply about your audience and purpose. They might ask you questions, for instance, about the mission and values of the graduate school department you’re applying to or what kind of work, research, and projects the department currently is producing. Tutors will help you to use this understanding of your audience to craft or revise more purposeful and refined applications.
This semester, we’re also piloting digital applications tutoring! Through WC Online (our online scheduling system), we have one tutor who will video chat with you about your applications materials. The digital tutoring is easy—you upload your paper into a work space that allows you and the tutor to text chat, video chat, and write on a shared work space. If you get confused with the process, just make the appointment and login at the scheduled time, and Jeanette (the digital applications tutor) will help you figure out what to do.
