Service Opportunity: ELSO Ambassadors
The English Language Support Office (ELSO) is seeking native English speakers to participate in ELSO programs.
ELSO, a newly established program, provides language support to international graduate students who use English as a second language.
Participating in our program would give you opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue, allow you to further engage in and contribute to the Cornell community, and add a line to your resume.
Further, your participation would enhance multilingual graduate students’ oral communication skills. International graduate students need to use oral English in daily life, on campus and off, but may lack confidence due to lack of familiarity with American academic culture or experience interacting with native speakers of English.
ELSO Ambassadors are needed for the following programs:
ELSO Game Time: ELSO Game Time is ELSO’s conversation program. Every Thursday, from 4:30-5:30, we meet in the Big Red Barn during International Coffee Hour to play games that encourages language use, such as Apples to Apples, Taboo, and Pictionary. You are welcome to either join a game or lead a game.
WRIT 6100: WRIT 6100 is our course on oral communication. During this course, international graduate students lead 20-minute discussions on topics of their choosing. You are welcome to join as many or as few discussions as fit your schedule.
Workshop on Conversational English: On Friday, March 6, from 1-2:30, ELSO is hosting a workshop for multilingual international graduate students. We’d love to have some native-English speaking participants!
If you are interested in serving as an ELSO Ambassador, contact Michelle Cox at firstname.lastname@example.org. There will be an orientation meeting on Friday, March 13 from 3:30-4:30 in Rockefeller 178.
