Summer Internship Program

OVERVIEW

The First-Year Writing Seminar Summer Internship program offers an opportunity for future FWS Graduate Student Instructors to have an immersive experience working directly in a FWS classroom under the guidance of a mentor teacher. The FWS Classroom Internship Experience seeks to foster experience with and reflection on:

  • Course design
  • Classroom management
  • Lesson planning
  • Student Conferencing
  • Responding to student writing
  • Grading strategies

EXPECTATIONS

The internship will take place during Cornell’s 6-week summer session; concurrent enrollment in WRIT 7100: Teaching Writing, the Knight Institute’s teaching practicum, is required. During the summer session, FWSs meet every day, Monday through Friday, for 75 minutes. FWS interns are expected to attend all class sessions.

FWS interns will consult with their assigned mentor teacher about the role they wish to play in the classroom and with students. Such work may involve:

  • Facilitating classroom group work
  • Teaching one or more class sessions
  • Designing reading and writing assignments
  • Holding office hours
  • Responding to student writing
  • Attending weekly meetings
