As we return from fall break—hopefully well-rested and energized!—now is good time to reflect on your writing goals and remaining semester assignments. As a kind of self-assessment, you might ask yourself the following questions:
-
How do I feel about the writing I’ve already turned in this semester? Does it represent my best work and efforts? Why or why not?
-
What steps have I taken to grow as a writer and thinker this semester?
-
What major assignments do I have left? How can I build into my calendar the space for brainstorming, drafting, getting feedback, and revising my work?
As you plan ahead for your remaining writing projects this semester, we hope you’ll remember the role the Cornell Writing Centers can play in your writing process! We have highly trained friendly peer tutors who love to talk about writing! They are available to talk through any stage of your writing process. Specifically, they might help you:
-
Understand an assignment and its writing goals;
-
Brainstorm ideas for getting started on a new assignment;
-
Develop stronger ideas, arguments, claims, and source-use in essay drafts;
-
Read drafts in order to locate writing issues and develop strategies for revision;
-
Incorporate sources and evidence responsibly and effectively;
-
Consider questions of depth, analysis, organization, audience expectation, paragraph development, and style;
-
Identify patterns of error in grammar or usage;
-
Discuss vocabulary choices, syntax, grammar and other sentence-level interests.
While tutoring can sometimes be assumed to be for struggling writers, we encourage all writers to see sharing their work and talking about their ideas and writing as an essential part of their writing process.
